A bizarre bug is currently plaguing the web version of X, preventing users from deleting or cutting text in their posts and replies. According to complaints surfacing across the platform over the last 24 hours, the backspace and delete keys have completely stopped registering in the text field.

Over on Reddit, the OP said that selecting text and hitting backspace, delete, or using the cut shortcut has no visible effect. They noted that clicking the post after a failed delete attempt results in an ugly amalgamation of text.

As expected, it’s leaving people stuck with their typos. A quick search for the issue on X shows a steady stream of confused users wondering if their computer keyboards are suddenly broken.

One user posted an apology for a jumbled reply, saying their backspace key quit working without warning. Another reported that the browser version of X feels laggy overall, with the backspace key failing randomly.

In my testing on Chrome on a Mac, I wasn’t able to reproduce the bug. So it’s unclear what exactly is going on or what’s causing the delete and backspace buttons to not register at times.

The Reddit poster mentioned they are running Firefox on Linux. But other reports about the issue do not include the browser name or OS. So we can’t pinpoint the exact setups that might be affected.

X support has not publicly acknowledged the glitch yet. For now, users dealing with the bug have to highlight and manually type over their mistakes if they want to fix a typo before hitting send.
