Reddit’s “View in App” banner is now appearing on every mobile web page for some

Reddit is ramping up its push to get mobile web visitors into its native app, and it is getting aggressive. For a growing number of people, the “View in Reddit App” pop-up is no longer a one-time nuisance. It now appears on every single page load.

We reported late last month that Reddit was testing an un-dismissible banner for a subset of mobile browser users, completely blocking their usage on the mobile website. This new behavior looks like yet another step in the same direction.

In one post on the bugs subreddit, a user noted that pressing the close button makes absolutely no difference. The banner comes right back as soon as they open the next page.

A commenter there said they will stop using Reddit on their phone entirely until the company reverts the change. Another user mentioned they finally gave up and switched to a third-party app because of the constant interruptions.

Over in the enshittification community, the complaints are nearly identical. One user reported having to dismiss the app prompt every one to three clicks just to browse normal threads. They had to close it three separate times just to publish their post.

Some people are already sharing workarounds to deal with the roadblocks. Someone suggested using the Brave browser or Firefox with a popup blocker to help suppress the prompt. It apparently still pesters you if you are not logged in, but it makes the site usable again.

According to that same thread, Reddit has also added a new “Read more” button on text posts. Mobile web users have to tap it even if they already clicked into the post specifically to read it. It is just another forced interaction stacked on top of the app banners.

In another thread on the hatethissmug subreddit, a user pointed out the sheer repetition. They go from the home page to a post, and the banner is there. From a post to a subreddit, and it is back again.

Right now, it is unclear if this relentless spamming is a temporary bug or a deliberate choice to make the mobile web site too annoying to use.

Granted that it’s not happening for everyone, it’s likely that this too might be a niche test that Reddit is running to see what works best to get users to download the app instead.

As usual, we’ll post an update if there’s something new to share.
