Reddit acknowledges new iPad app freezing issues after Liquid Glass UI update (workaround inside)
Reddit’s newly introduced Liquid Glass interface on iOS is quickly becoming a source of frustration for many iPad users, with reports now piling up about severe freezing, lockups, and crashes following the latest app update.
Just days after Reddit rolled out the redesigned interface, users are now flooding the platform’s bug forums with complaints that the app has become borderline unusable on iPadOS.
The majority of reports appear tied to Reddit app version 2026.19.9 running on iPadOS 26.5, although users say the problems are affecting multiple iPad models, including the iPad mini, iPad Pro, and standard iPad variants.
Reddit app freezing after interacting with posts and images
One of the most widely reported bugs involves the app freezing completely after users interact with image posts in the new UI.
In a recent thread on Reddit’s r/bugs forum discussing the new UI hanging on iPadOS, a user explained that the issue can be reproduced consistently by following a simple sequence of actions:
Open an image post from the home feed
Tap the image to open it fullscreen
Swipe down to dismiss the image
Swipe back to return to the main feed
According to the user, the app becomes completely unresponsive immediately afterward.
“The main feed is now frozen/uninteractable. Some of the post view is still showing, like the x-button in the top left (uninteractable as well),” the report explains.
The same user also criticized the apparent lack of iPadOS optimization in the redesign, pointing to several UI inconsistencies and layout bugs introduced alongside the Liquid Glass changes.
A couple of users quickly confirmed the exact same behavior in replies. One commenter wrote:
“I’m also experiencing this on my iPad (mini). I’m force quitting and reopening the app constantly with this update.”
Another simply added:
“Same here, on my iPad Pro.”
Swiping gestures appear to trigger the bug most often
Another bug report about Reddit freezing when swiping to exit posts suggests gesture navigation itself may be playing a major role in triggering the freezes.
According to the report, the app frequently locks up when users swipe to exit a post instead of tapping the “X” button manually.
The original poster noted that the issue occurs roughly half the time and usually forces them to fully close and relaunch the app before it becomes usable again.
That thread is particularly notable because Reddit has already officially acknowledged the issue.
A Reddit admin initially requested a screen recording from the user, but later updated the response after recognizing the problem internally:
“ETA: Just kidding - this is on the radar! Should be fixed up by the next app release. Thanks for the report!”
Reddit shares temporary workaround for freezing issue
Alongside the acknowledgement, Reddit also shared an official workaround that appears to temporarily restore responsiveness without requiring users to force close the app.
According to the admin response, affected users can bypass the freeze by switching to another navigation tab before returning to the Home feed.
The admin explained:
“In the meantime, a workaround to bypass the ‘freeze’ is to tap on another tab (like inbox, profile, etc), then tap on the Home tab again. This should do the trick while we work on releasing the fix.”
Some users have also discovered additional workarounds of their own.
One commenter said they were sometimes able to recover the app by opening the profile menu, briefly entering the post creation screen, and then backing out again.
While these solutions may help temporarily, users say the freezes return repeatedly during normal browsing sessions.
Users say the latest Reddit update feels unstable on iPadOS
Beyond the fullscreen image bug, reports suggest the latest Reddit update is introducing broader stability problems throughout the app.
In a separate r/help thread about the newest Reddit app update freezing on iPadOS, one user said the app froze twice within just 15 minutes after updating.
“Hello Reddit, please roll back the latest changes to the app. The previous release was rock solid,” the user wrote.
Another user shared video evidence of the Reddit app freezing on iPadOS running on an M5 11-inch iPad Pro with iPadOS 26.5.

According to the report, opening a post, entering fullscreen image mode, and swiping back to the feed causes the app to freeze every single time.
“It’s an app breaking bug for me,” the user explained.
Meanwhile, another report about scrolling on the Reddit home feed locking up on iPadOS points to scrolling issues on the home feed, with users saying the app locks up after swiping back from posts or accidentally triggering certain gesture interactions.
The user added that the only reliable recovery methods are minimizing the app or force-closing it entirely.
Crashing complaints are also beginning to emerge. In yet another bug thread discussing how Reddit version 2026.19.9 on iPadOS 26.5 is “absolutely horrible”, one frustrated user claimed the app now crashes “every couple of seconds.”
Fix expected in the next Reddit app update
For now, Reddit says the issue is already being worked on internally and that a proper fix should arrive in the next app release.
The company hasn’t shared an exact rollout timeline yet, but the acknowledgment is at least a positive sign for affected users who have been dealing with repeated freezes since installing the latest update.
Until the fix arrives, users may want to rely on Reddit’s tab-switching workaround and avoid gesture-heavy navigation patterns that appear most likely to trigger the freezes in the current build.
