Chrome users were frustrated about the broken dark mode on the browser for several months. Fortunately, a reliable fix for the issue has already landed in the developer channel (Chromium version) and is on track for stable release.

The problem emerged with the Chrome 141 update in late 2025. The browser’s “Force Dark Mode” feature began malfunctioning. It was supposed to selectively invert some parts, but instead, it applied unwanted inversions to content that should’ve stayed untouched.

This resulted in weird colors, readability issues, and visual artifacts. Since it’s a bug in Chromium, various browsers that are based on it were also affected. For several months, users saw no resolution.

A Microsoft engineer actively contributed to the resolution of this issue, initially tracing the regression to a color space issue. The team later improved the inversion logic.

Recently, testers on Chromium 150.0.7846.4 discovered the fix in action. According to reports on Reddit and Chromium Issue Tracker, dark mode is now functioning correctly again.

It delivers the correct contrast without causing errors, and the accurate logic for selective inversion has been restored. Users will soon be able to enjoy system-synced dark themes on websites as they intended.

Considering the usual rollout pace for such updates, you can expect the patched version to roll out to the stable channel in the coming weeks. It’s worth noting that there’s no exact date for the release. For a quick fix, users noticed that downgrading to Chrome 140 fixes the issues, and all sites appear normally.

The cause was likely a regression/bug with Chrome’s Force Dark Mode feature, more specifically, the selective-inversion option under chrome://flags.
