Google brings “discomorphism” to Pixel with new Disco icon pack
Google has quietly added a new Disco icon pack to Pixel phones, and it looks like it was pulled straight from Spotify’s short-lived disco ball moment.
The Disco pack showed up in the Custom Icons section of the Pixel Launcher, spotted by users on r/pixel_phones earlier today. It sits alongside existing styles like Scribbles, Cookies, Easel, Treasure, and Stardust, but Disco is clearly the new one here.
Every app icon gets a reflective, mirrored tile treatment that makes your home screen look like a nightclub ceiling. Facebook becomes a glittering blue F. Telegram turns into a disco ball with a paper plane cut through it. WhatsApp goes sparkly green. The icons are pretty catchy, at least at first glance.
Here are some screenshots I took for reference:
One commenter on the thread said: “They must be big fans of Spotify’s new logo.”
That checks out. We covered the discomorphism wave a few days ago after Spotify temporarily swapped its app icon for a mirrored disco ball to mark its 20th anniversary. The style caught on fast, with creators and brands like Notion jumping on it before Spotify announced that it’s pulling the icon back.
It’s worth noting, though, that the Disco icons only show up on your home screen. The app drawer keeps your regular icons. So it’s a cosmetic layer, not a full system-wide overhaul.
Personally, I think it’s a cool novelty. For a screenshot or two, it looks slick. But it starts looking ugly pretty quick when you’re staring at it every day. Everyone’s taste differs, but I won’t be switching my Pixel devices to Disco anytime soon.
Even the reaction on Reddit is pretty split. One user said they tried it and found it “kinda unpleasant to look at,” while another called it “AI-generated slop.”
If you too want to check out the new Disco icon pack, then tap and hold on an empty space on your homescreen, go to Wallpaper and style, then go to Icons, and tap the ‘Create’ button. Here you should see the new Disco pack on top. Tap on it and and then proceed to download the icons. Once done, hit the checkmark icon to apply them to your homescreen.
