Garnix is shutting down in July as it joins Shopify, code going open source

Garnix, the CI service built for nixified, flake-based GitHub repositories, is shutting down its hosted service after announcing that it is joining forces with Shopify.

In a statement shared by the Garnix team to users via email, the company said the hosted Garnix service will go offline on July 15, 2026, and that all user data will be deleted on the same day, including build artifacts. Users are being urged to download anything they want to keep before then.

At the same time, the team confirmed a notable silver lining: the Garnix codebase is being open sourced. That means users who rely on the platform may be able to move to their own instance, or potentially a shared community-run deployment if one emerges.

“We are sad to announce that, as part of this transition, the hosted garnix service will shut down on July 15th 2026,” the team said. “But we are open sourcing the garnix codebase… we hope this will help you smoothly move to using your own instance or a shared one.”

The announcement did not go into detail about what exactly the Shopify deal means operationally, but the message clearly suggests that the Garnix team is moving on from the hosted CI product while leaving the software itself in the hands of the community.

For users, the news is bittersweet. Garnix had built a loyal following among Nix users because of its tight integration with Nix-based workflows and its reputation for speed and reproducibility. One user reacting to the shutdown said Garnix was “the best CI system I ever used by a large margin,” praising how quickly it built projects compared with GitHub Actions. Another pointed to Garnix’s “call by hash” blog post as one of the standout ideas they had come across.

Others are already looking ahead to what comes next. Since the project is now open source, several users are discussing self-hosting possibilities and alternative tools for Nix-based CI. Some community members mentioned other emerging Garnix alternatives such as NixCI, Botanix & Gradient and Tangled.org, while others expressed hope that Garnix itself could live on in a self-hosted form.

The Garnix repository is now publicly available on GitHub.The project documentation also includes instructions for running Garnix locally in VMs, setting up a GitHub app, and developing the frontend, suggesting that the open-sourcing move may make it easier for power users and organizations to experiment with deployments of their own.

For now, the key date for current users is July 15, 2026. After that, the hosted Garnix service and stored build data will be gone, so anyone depending on the platform will need to back up what they need and start planning a migration.
