Firefox 154 is scheduled to roll out today (August 18), and it brings various usability improvements, such as a “Manage AI” button, the ability to highlight and select text within PDFs, and more.

At the time of writing, the stable version of Firefox v154 hasn’t yet arrived on my laptop (running macOS). In fact, I still see v153.0.4, and we covered the changes here. It’ll probably be live in a few hours. However, I was able to get v154 up and running on iOS, which also introduced the native ad blocker.

Regardless, I have installed the latest Firefox Beta, and all of the changes in v154 are included in that.

Here’s a short summary of the important user-facing changes:

  1. New button in the address bar called “Manage AI” that takes you to the AI settings page.

  2. When you force-refresh a page, Firefox properly refreshes the favicons.

  3. You can now highlight and select text inside PDF files.

  4. You can now tell Firefox to clear cookies and site data for a website when you close the browser, but still keep tracking protection active for that site.

  5. Vertical Tabs improvement: The sidebar hides along with the rest of the toolbars and only comes back when you move your mouse to the edge of the screen.

  6. Smart Window is now smarter; it automatically suggests grouping related tabs together, and also gives a name for the groups.

  7. Firefox View (the button that shows you recent tabs and history) is no longer pinned to the toolbar by default for new users.

These additions aside, there are some platform-specific changes as well, including some usability improvements on both Windows and macOS.

On Android, you can now choose a custom name and save location for downloaded files. Automatic page translation works more reliably. Additionally, bookmark search returns 75 results at once, making it easier to find what you’re looking for.

While the stable Release Notes haven’t yet updated with the latest information, you can view the v154 Beta changelog here.

In other Firefox news, Mozilla is working on a true OLED dark theme for the browser. More on that here.
