Mozilla has finally answered the question Firefox users on phones have been asking. The free VPN built into Firefox is coming to Android and iOS.

The catch is that Mozilla still has no real date to share.

A user asked the official Firefox account on X whether the free VPN would ever make its way to mobile. Firefox replied, “We have a free built-in VPN on desktop today, and will be rolling out on Android and iOS soon.”

That is about as specific as it gets. There’s no launch window. Just “soon”, which could mean next month or could mean Mozilla wants people to stop asking for now.

The desktop VPN is not a full VPN for your entire device. It only protects traffic inside Firefox by hiding your IP address and sending browser traffic through a proxy. Other apps are left alone.

So you can expect the same to be true when the feature arrives on Firefox Android and iOS. Turning on the feature in Firefox will not protect YouTube, WhatsApp, your banking app or anything else running on the phone. It is more of a browser privacy tool than a replacement for a proper device-wide VPN.

The free version normally comes with 50GB of data each month. Mozilla has temporarily removed that limit for desktop users until August 31, as we reported last month. Once the promotion ends, the 50GB cap is expected to return.

There is also the small matter of availability. The desktop VPN has been rolling out in stages, and plenty of users still cannot see it even if they live in a supported country. For people who just want a little extra privacy on hotel or coffee shop Wi-Fi, the feature makes sense. People expecting it to cover their whole phone may be disappointed. Mozilla already sells a paid VPN that does that, so the free Firefox version is deliberately limited.

Meanwhile, the browser maker has also been busy on other fronts. Firefox 153 has just started hitting the stable channel while the company’s social media team has finally returned to X after nearly 18 months.

For now, we’ll simply have to wait and see if Mozilla shares a final date or if they just add the VPN with an upcoming Firefox update on iOS and Android.
