Brave browser users report YouTube playback error saying ‘An error occurred. Please try again later.’ [U: Fixed]
Update [May 23, 2026]: Brave has now acknowledged the YouTube playback issue affecting some users and says it has already released a fix through its adblock lists. To get the fix as soon as possible, Brave is advising users to manually update the browser’s ad blocker, then reload their YouTube tabs.
On desktop, go to Settings > Shields > Content filtering and click Update lists. On iOS, go to Settings > Shields & Privacy > Content Filtering and tap Update Lists. On Android, go to Settings > Brave Shields & privacy > Content filtering and tap UPDATE. Brave says users can also check brave://components on desktop and Android after updating to confirm that Brave Default Adblock Filters is at version 1.0.1989 or later and Experimental ad blocker is at version 1.0.84 or later.
This effectively confirms that the issue was tied to Brave’s filtering side rather than a generic YouTube outage, and it also explains why some users were able to work around it temporarily by refreshing pages or disabling Shields. Brave says the fix should arrive automatically eventually, but manual list updates are the fastest route for affected users right now.
Original article from May 23 follows:
Brave Browser has steadily become one of the go-to options for users who want a more privacy-focused browsing experience without giving up convenience. One of its biggest attractions is the built-in Shields feature, which can block ads and trackers right out of the box — including YouTube ads.
That convenience has naturally made Brave increasingly popular among users who don’t want to pay for YouTube Premium just to get an ad-free experience.
But now, some Brave users are reporting a new issue where YouTube videos fail to play entirely.
YouTube videos reportedly broken on Brave with Shields enabled
According to multiple user reports, trying to play a YouTube video on Brave results in an error message saying: “An error occurred. Please try again later.”
Users say the problem appears when Brave Shields are enabled. Turning Shields off reportedly makes YouTube videos work again, although ads immediately return.
One of the screenshots shared by affected users shows YouTube failing to load a video player entirely while displaying the playback error message.
The issue was recently highlighted in discussions on Reddit, X, and the Brave community forum, where users started connecting the problem directly to Brave’s ad-blocking functionality.
Some users claim refreshing the page immediately fixes the problem, but only temporarily. Others say the error keeps returning unless Shields are disabled.
Interestingly, the issue doesn’t appear to affect everyone.
I tested YouTube playback on Brave from my end while logged out and into my Google account, and didn’t run into any issues. Videos loaded normally, and playback worked fine even with Shields enabled.
This inconsistency suggests this may not be a full-scale outage affecting every Brave user equally.
Logged-in accounts may be part of the puzzle
Some affected users believe the issue mainly appears when signed into a YouTube or Google account, although that theory doesn’t fully hold up based on my own testing.
Since I remained logged in throughout testing and still experienced no playback issues, the problem may instead depend on a mix of factors like:
Specific Brave versions
Shield filter lists
Account-side experiments
Regional rollouts
YouTube anti-ad-block systems
Browser cache or cookies
At the moment, there’s no clear pattern explaining why some users are affected while others aren’t.
Is Google targeting ad blockers again?
Naturally, many users suspect YouTube is once again cracking down on ad blockers.
That wouldn’t exactly be surprising.
Over the past couple of years, Google has aggressively pushed users toward YouTube Premium while simultaneously tightening restrictions around ad-blocking tools. We’ve already seen YouTube introduce warning popups, delayed video loading, and playback restrictions for users running traditional ad blockers.
Since Brave’s Shields effectively block YouTube ads without needing third-party extensions, some users now believe YouTube may be detecting Brave differently and interfering with playback when Shields are active.
Right now, though, there’s no concrete evidence confirming this theory.
It’s also possible this is simply a bug introduced either on Brave’s side or through changes to YouTube’s player behavior that Brave hasn’t fully adapted to yet.
No official acknowledgment yet
So far, neither Brave nor YouTube has officially acknowledged the issue.
That means users are currently relying on temporary workarounds such as:
Refreshing the YouTube page
Disabling Brave Shields
Clearing cookies and cache
Logging out of YouTube accounts
Trying private browsing mode
Of those, disabling Shields appears to be the most consistently effective workaround, although it defeats one of the main reasons many people use Brave in the first place. If this does turn out to be related to YouTube’s anti-ad-block measures, history suggests Brave developers will likely respond quickly with adjustments or fixes.
For now, affected users may simply need to wait while the situation develops.
