Android is getting Brave Origin next month, aiming to be the “best” mobile browser

Brave will roll out its Brave Origin upgrade to Android users next month. Keith, the company’s Program Manager, confirmed the timeline on X after posting that Brave would soon have the “best browser on Android.”

The announcement drew confusion from users who were wondering why a new app was necessary when a mobile version already exists. Replying to a comment from user @HawkZxo pointing out that “we already have brave,” Keith clarified the distinction: “Brave but Origin!!”

When asked about the timeline, he said, “Less than a month.”

The expansion will not arrive as a separate standalone app on mobile devices. According to Brave’s official documentation, the Android version operates strictly as an in-app upgrade toggle for the existing browser, unlike the separate desktop applications built for Windows and macOS.

That said, you don’t need to worry about purchasing Origin on Android separately. An X user named @YoungMOOBY asked if an existing desktop purchase of Origin would transfer to mobile, and Keith confirmed that a single license covers both platforms, allowing up to 10 device activations.

The 10-device activation bit is something to watch out for. We highlighted how users can quickly run out of activations if they have multiple devices back when Brave Origin first launched.

That said, rather than adding new utilities, the premium tier pays to remove them. Upgrading to Origin strips the browser down to its core privacy engine, disabling revenue-generating components like Brave Rewards, the Leo AI assistant, the built-in crypto wallet, and native ads.

Keith criticized the current landscape of mobile web software during the exchange, claiming Android suffers from too many bad browsers. He stated that the GrapheneOS default browser, Vanadium, is the only option close to being perfect for his needs, promising Origin’s stripped-down build will bring “peak” performance.

The Vanadium mention points to a specific friction point for Android privacy enthusiasts. As @HawkZxo noted in the thread, Vanadium and the standard Brave app are often considered the only safe mobile options, though Vanadium remains heavily tied to GrapheneOS builds.

This reveal follows an awkward public relations misstep for the company. Users on X recently called out the browser maker for hypocrisy, which resulted in a quick cleanup operation where Brave deleted a tweet mocking Firefox ads after its own ad-supported features faced scrutiny. We covered that whole fiasco earlier today.
