Hong Kong police seized 172kg of suspected cocaine worth HK$120 million hidden inside three metal containers and arrested three men.
Hong Kong police have arrested three men after uncovering 172 kilograms of suspected cocaine concealed inside specially modified metal containers at a warehouse in Yuen Long.
The raid took place on Friday night at a 3,000-square-foot warehouse on Kung Um Road, where officers found three men using power tools to cut open two of the massive steel containers. Investigators believe the men were attempting to retrieve the drugs after they had been smuggled into the city.
Police said each container measured about 1.6 metres long, one metre wide and 35 centimetres high, with an estimated weight of three tonnes. According to investigators, the containers had been specially constructed with layers intended to interfere with X-ray scans, making it more difficult for customs officers to detect what was hidden inside.
After forcing the containers open, officers recovered 172 one-kilogram bricks of suspected cocaine. The drugs have an estimated street value of HK$120 million (around US$15.4 million).
The three suspects, Pakistani nationals aged between 28 and 35, were arrested on suspicion of trafficking in dangerous drugs. All three were holders of recognisance forms, temporary documents that allow individuals to remain in Hong Kong but do not permit them to work.
Police said the men remained in custody and were expected to appear before Tuen Mun Court on Monday to face drug trafficking charges.
Investigators are continuing to examine how the cocaine entered Hong Kong and whether the suspects were acting on behalf of a larger trafficking network. Authorities believe the sophisticated concealment method points to the involvement of an organised crime group experienced in international drug smuggling.
Under Hong Kong’s Dangerous Drugs Ordinance, anyone convicted of drug trafficking faces a maximum penalty of life imprisonment and a fine of HK$5 million.
