Germany Seizes 8 Tons of Cocaine in €500M Drug Bust
German authorities seized over 8 tons of cocaine worth €500 million and arrested two suspects in Spain linked to the shipment.
German authorities have announced the seizure of more than eight metric tons of cocaine with an estimated street value of €500 million, marking one of the country’s largest drug busts in recent years. Two suspects believed to be connected to the shipment were later arrested in Spain.
The operation began on February 9, 2026, when customs officials at the Port of Wilhelmshaven, a major container terminal on Germany’s North Sea coast, inspected a shipment that had arrived from West Africa and was destined for Spain. Authorities said the container was declared as carrying cacao beans but instead contained more than 400 packages of compressed cocaine.
According to investigators, the drugs were concealed in black foil-wrapped packages and had an estimated weight exceeding eight tons. The entire shipment was subsequently destroyed in Germany as part of the investigation.
Following months of coordination between German and Spanish authorities, two suspected organizers of the trafficking operation were arrested on May 14, 2026, in El Ejido, located in Spain’s Almería province. Investigators said the arrests took place during a controlled handover operation involving the container.
Officials identified one of the suspects as the manager of an import company that had previously come under scrutiny in connection with another cocaine shipment. Both individuals are suspected of helping organize the transport of the narcotics from West Africa into Europe. If convicted, they could face significant prison sentences under Spanish law.
The case highlights the continued use of commercial shipping routes by transnational drug trafficking groups seeking to move large quantities of cocaine into Europe. German and Spanish authorities said international cooperation played a key role in identifying the suspects and disrupting the operation.
