What county card records reveal about Maine’s budget strain

NorthEast News reviewed a recently published report about Penobscot County’s credit-card spending, based on records obtained through Maine’s Freedom of Access Act. The Bangor Daily News review counted more than 1,700 purchases totaling over $350,000 in 2025, while county officials were confronting a multimillion-dollar shortfall.

The records include ordinary items as well as spending that raises questions about oversight. They do not establish that every purchase was improper, and the card total was a small part of the county’s roughly $35 million budget.
