Seen from a place of safety, there is a sublime fascination to fire—and to wildfire in particular. The spread of flames through the landscape has an immediacy, a will-they-won’t-they caprice, that is hard not to see as agency. Rain and wind can sometimes seem alive, but that vitality is clearer and more awesome still with fires. Magnificent and malevolent, they approach and they devour and they must be killed.
