🚨Mulan: Breaking Rules, Defying Marriage, and Becoming the Warrior that Saves China🚨
Women becoming warriors and saving China?! That’s exactly what happens in Disney’s Mulan! The movies follows Mulan as she pretends to be a man to take her father’s place in the Chinese army. I think the movie does a great job of challenging gender stereotypes, by showing that women can be just as brave, strong, and capable as men. Mulan proves that women can do amazing things too, even when people tells them they can’t. In this blog, I will be discussing how Mulan challenges gender stereotypes, by saving China, becoming a warrior, and going against getting married.
Mulan challenges gender stereotypes by becoming a warrior in a society where women are expected to stay at home and get married. She disguises herself as a man and takes her father’s place in the Chinese army. This was shown in the beginning of the movie, after Mulan’s father was told to rejoin the army. This shows that Mulan is brave and determined, even when she has to break the law. The Emperor says, “You don’t meet a girl like that every dynasty.” This shows that Mulan is unique because she proves that women can be strong and capable warriors. Overall, Mulan shows that no matter what gender you are, you can still achieve big things.
Another way that Mulan challenges gender stereotypes is by helping save China, even though women are not expected to be warriors. Mulan uses her intelligence and bravery to help defeat the Huns and save the Emperor. This was shown in the middle of the movie when the Chinese Army was fighting the Huns, and at the end when she saved China and the Emperor. This shows that Mulan can succeed in situations where society expects only men to succeed. The Emperor says, “And… you have saved us all.” I think this is inspiring because Mulan proves that women can be heroes and make a huge difference. Overall, Mulan shows that anyone can be a hero, regardless of their gender.
Mulan challenges gender stereotypes by not following society’s expectations of getting married and becoming a perfect wife. She is turned down by the matchmaker. At the beginning of the movie, Mulan visits the matchmaker but struggles to act the way a traditional Chinese woman is expected to. This shows that Mulan does not want to change who she is just to please others. Mulan sings, “I will never pass for a perfect bride, or a perfect daughter.” I think this is important because women should be able to follow their dreams instead of being forced to fit into people’s expectations. Overall, Mulan teaches us that everyone should be free to make their own choices in life.
I think Mulan is a wonderful movie because it challenges gender stereotypes in many ways. Mulan proves that women can be brave warriors, save China and choose their own future instead of being forced to get married. She goes beyond society’s expectations by doing things that women were not traditionally allowed to do, proving that women can be just as strong, intelligent and capable as men. In my opinion, the movie teaches us that gender should never stop someone from following their dreams and showing who they really are.
